From the Eastern Daily Press, Friday, July 9, 2004:
So we get all the spin and propaganda but not the whole and real truth about Saddam Hussein.
If he is personally responsible for all the atrocities which have been outlined in press and media, then he is without doubt mentally deranged (some form of homicidal) and should have been consigned to a psychiatric institution long ago, instead of being accepted by the international community as a head of state.
But when we (the UK, the US and our associates) take people into custody we must treat them humanely or we lower ourselves to the lowest-level terrorism. We are seeing this in plenty at present.
If we apply common sense we know that Saddam could not have held power and raised an army and fought a war without the help and complicity of other nations.
And there seems no doubt that help and complicity was forthcoming, because it was in the interest of these nations.
Saddam cannot get a fair trial unless he can be handed over to an international court in which none of the interested parties can partake - an independent court which has the power to call any person, regardless of status, into the witness box.
Furthermore, there must be an independent international authority which can investigate all those who have had dealings with Saddan and, if necessary, bring to trial anyone it decides has been implicated in support of his alleged crimes.
If we are serious about fighting terrorism, we must first root out the roots of it in our own societies. The evil that grows in our midst must be conquered and brought under control and the secret dealings banished. Only when we attain proper democracy, freedom and compliance with proper international standards and justice can we lecture others.
