COLBY or Coleby, is a parish with a scattered population, 3½ miles N. by E. of Aylsham, comprising 69 houses, 336 souls, and 1,115 acres of land, belonging to Lord Suffield, Mr. S. D. Roper, and Mr. W. H. Windham, Esq. ; the latter is lord of the manor. The Church, dedicated to St. Giles, is a neat edifice, which was repaired in 1748 and 1834. In the former year the north aisle was taken down, and the lead sold to repair the church. The east window was decorated about twenty years ago with ancient stained glass, at the expense of the rector, who also purchased the altar piece—a fine painting of Moses and Aaron. The font is richly carved. The living is a discharged rectory, valued in the King's book at £8 15s. 10d., in the gift of Lord Suffield, and enjoyed by the Rev. George Coleby, B.A. There are 7a. of glebe, and the tithes were commuted in 1839 for £361 16s. The Church land consists of 9a. 1r. 29p., and 1a. at Banningham. There was also a cottage at the latter place, which has been sold for £48. Richd. Snelling, in 1723, left two yearly rent-charges, viz. :—20s. for the aged poor, and 30s. for clothing poor children of Coleby. Dr. Colby, bishop of Lismore and Waterford, in Ireland, who died in 1406, was a native of this parish.
