HASSINGHAM is a parish about one mile east from Buckenham station, 9 miles east-south-east from Norwich and 11 west from Yarmouth, in the Southern division of the county, Blofield hundred and union, Norwich county court district, rural deanery of Blofield and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary was re-seated and otherwise beautified at the sole expense of the late rector, the Rev. T. H. Beauchamp: it is a small edifice, consistng of chancel and nave, fine tower, round at the base, and octagonal at the top, and surrounded by eight pinnacles. The register dates from the year 1750. The living is a rectory, conslidated with that of Buckenham Ferry joint yearly value 239, with 7 acres of glebe here, in the gift of Sir Reginald William Proctor-Beauchamp bart. and held since 1877 by the Rev. George Elwin B.A. of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. The tithes have been commuted for 102 yearly. The poors' allotment of 14 acres produces 10 10s. yearly. Sir Reginald William Proctor-Beauchamp bart. who is lord of the manor, and James G. Bessey esq. are chief landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, gravel and sand. The chef cops are wheat, oats and barley. The marshes are used for grazing. The area is 574 acres, rated at 825; and the pupulation in 1881 was 104.
