NARFORD is a parish 5 miles north-west from Swaffham and 1½ north-east from Narborough station, in the Western division of the county, South Greenhoe hundred, Swaffham union and county court district, rural deanery of Cranwich, archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich: there is not any appearance of a village now, although at one time it is stated to have been a very considerable place; and markets were held here, but at a very remote period. The CHURCH of St. Mary the virgin is an old stone building, and consists of chancel, nave and aisle, with square tower, in mixed styles. The register dates from the year 1596. The living is a vicarage, annexed to that of Narborough, joint yearly value £508, with residence and 120 acres of glebe, in the gift of and held since 1864 by the Rev. William Edward Allfree M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford, who resides at Narborough. On the hill was formerly a chapel, dedicated to St. Thomas à Becket. Narford Hall, a handsome building, is pleasantly situated in a well-timbered lawn, with a large lake of pure spring water, has been for some generations the seat of the Fountaine family; the present owner is Algernon Charles Fountaine esq. D.L., J.P. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is light and sandy, with a gravelly subsoil. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 2,396 acres; rateable value, £1,560; the population in 1881 was 41.

Parish Clerk, Thomas Reader.
