GREAT PLUMSTEAD is a vilage and parish, 5 miles east from Norwich and 3 north-west from Brundall station, in the Southern division of the county, Blofield hundred and union, Norwich county court district, rural deanery of Blofield and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a structure of flint, and consists of chancel and nave: it was restored in 1876 at the expense of William Birkbeck esq. The register dates from the year 1774. The living is a vicarage, yearly value 230, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Norwich and held since 1880 by the Rev. John Thomas Howard M.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners graned a sum of 1,500 towards building a vicarage house here, which was erected in 1880. There is a fuel allotment of 29 acres, let at 40 yearly. The Earl of Rosebery, who is lord of the manor, Sir Henry J. Stracey bart, William Birkbeck esq. amd C. W. Unthank esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is mixed; subsoil, loam. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 1,403 acres; rateable value, 2,753; the population in 1881 was 334.



POST OFFICE.—Raymond Read, receiver. Letters arrive from Norwich at 6 a.m.; dispatched at 5 p.m. Box closes at 4.50 p.m. The nearest money order & telegraph office is at Blofield

A School Board of 5 members was formed in 1874; H. H. Cole, London street, Norwich, clerk to the board

Board School is now (1883) being enlarged to hold 70 children, which is about the average atendance; Mrs. Wright, mistress
