SAXLINGHAM NETHERGATE, a considerable village, 7 miles S. of Norwich, has in its parish 144 houses, 636 inhabitants, and 1,530 acres of land, partly belonging to the Rev. J. H. Steward, and all lying in his manors of Saxlingham-Netherhall, Overhall, and Thorpe Hall, the holders of which are subject to arbitrary fines. John Gordon, Esq., and the Rev. Wm. Walford, have estates here, and the former has a neat mansion, which contains a valuable collection of paintings. Two thirds of the common belong to this parish, and the rest to Saxlingham Thorpe, which also includes a small portion of the village. The Church, dedicated to St. Mary, is a neat structure with a square tower, containing five bells and a clock. The structure has been greatly improved, and four of the windows decorated with stained glass, by the present incumbent. A chaste marble memorial remembers the Ven. Archdeacon Gooch, a former rector of this parish, who died in 1823. The living is a discharged rectory, valued in the King's book at £13 11s. 8d., and has annexed to it that of Saxlingham Thorpe. The Rev. W. H. King is patron, and the Rev. S. W. King, M.A., incumbent. The tithes of the two parishes were commuted in 1843, for £792 7s. 6d. per annum. Here is a parochial school, chiefly supported by the rector. The Church Land, 8a., is let for £11 17s., and the Town Lands, 41a. 2r. 37p., now produce £53 8s. per annum, which is applied with the church rates, together with £2 2s., as part of the dividends of £105 1s. 3d., three-per-cent. stock, which has arisen from the sale of timber. The poor have £3 12s. yearly, left by Eliz. Bayspoole : £2 from the gravel pit land, left by the Rev. John Tuthill, and 19s. 2d. from £31 19s. 8d., three-per-cent stock, purchased with £20, the gift of Wm. Tuthill.

Post Office, at Thos. Buttifant's. Letters arrive at 10 a.m. and are despatched at 4.15 p.m.
