SUTTON is a pleasant village and parish, distant from Yarmouth 16 miles north-west, 10 south-east from North Walsham and about a mile to the centre of the village from both Catfield and Stalham stations on the Eastern and Midlands railway, in the Northern division of the county, hundred of Happing, Smallburgh union, North Walsham county court district, rural deanery of Waxham, archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St.Michael is an ancient building of flint and stone in the Perpendicular style: it consists of chancel, nave and porch, with square tower and 3 bells: it was for many years in a very dilapidated state, but was restored and beautified in 1848. The register dates from the year 1576. The living is a rectory, yearly value £325, with 15 acres of glebe in the gift of Marquis of Abergavenny and held since 1881 by the Rev. George Holloway M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel. There are 60 acres of land cut for fuel by the poor. The principal landowners are Francis Clowes esq. Mr.Thomas Worts and William Norton Burroughs esq. The soil is strong rich; subsoil. sand, gravel and brick earth. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 1,383 acres; rateable value, £2,209; and the population in 1881 was 378.
