THWAITE ST. MARY is a village and parish 12 miles south-east from Norwich and 4 north from Bungay station; in the Southern division of the county, Loddon hundred and Loddon and Clavering union, Beccles and Bungay county court district , rural deanery of Brooke, archdeaconry of Norfolk and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Mary is a small edifice in the Norman style, consisting of chancel and nave, with a thatched roof, and square tower containing 2 bells, and partly rebuilt of brick about a century ago and a curious Norman semi-circular door: it was retsored and re-seated in 1861. The register dates from the year 1537  The living is a rectory, gross yearly value 230, with good residence, built in 1868, in the gift of and held since 1866 by the Rev. George Russell Brett B.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge. This parish lies in two manors, viz—Sizeland and Broke; Lord Berners is lord of the former and Viscount Canterbury of the latter. The trustees of the late Sir W. F. F. Middleton, J. L. Bedingfield esq. the Rev. W. F. Thursby and Miss Gamble are the chief landowners. The soil is heavy clay; subsoil, clay. The crops are wheat, barley, beans and hay. The area is 676 acres; rated at 1,051; and the population in 1881 was 120.
