WIGGENHALL ST. PETER is a parish 4½ miles south-southwest from Lynn an 2 north-west from Magdalen road station, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Freebridge Marshland, union and county court district of Downham, rural deanery of Lynn Marshland and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Peter is an ancient structure of brick and stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel and nave, with a square embattled tower containing 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1695. The living is a vicarage, yearly value about £120, with one acre of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1853, by the Rev. Josiah Coombes, of St. Bees. Gustavus Helsham esq. J.P. is lord of the manor. George Sadler, Horace Spelman Marriott esqrs. and Mrs. Royle, are the chief landowners. The soil is sand, clay and silty loam; subsoil, clay and silt. The chief crops are wheat, oats and beans The area is 944 acres; almost 600 acres are on the west, and the remainder with the church and houses, on the east side of the river Ouse; rateable value, £1743; the population of the parish in 1881 was 144.
