WITTON, near Norwich, is a village and prish 2 miles north from Brundall station and 5 east from Norwich, in the Southern division of the county, Blofield hundred and union, Norwich county court district, rural deanery of Blofield and archdeaconry and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Margaret is a small building of flint in the First and Second Pointed styles, and consists of chancel, nave and small round tower containing 1 bell, and a south porch: the interior is seated with open oak benches: the east and west windows, also two in the nave, are memorial, and stained: there is a brass to Major Culley, who served in 16 actions, and died in 1834, also two tablets; one being to J. Penrice esq. The register dates from the year 1571. The living is a rectory, cosolodated with that of Brundall, gross yearly value 500, in the gift of and held since 1854 by the Rev. James Spurgeon Green M.A. of Christ's college, Cambridge, who resides in the rectory house. The principal landowners are Edward William Trafford, who is lord of the manor, and J. Cozens Wiley esq. The soil is mixed; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 587 acres; rateable value, 1,270; the population in 1881 was 134.
