WORTWELL is a parish 2½ miles east from Harleston and three-quarters of a mile from Homersfield station on the Waveney Valley branch of the Great Eastern railway, situated on the borders of Suffolk and on the river Waveney, in the Southern division of the county, Earsham hundred, Depwade union, Harleston county court district; it is ecclesiastically united with Redenhall. The parish church of Redenhall is situated partly within the bounds of Wortwell. Here is a Congregational chapel with burial ground and minister's home attached, endowed with £40 a year; the Baptists have also a chapel. The town estate of 33 acres lets for £52 yearly, the proceeds of which are applied according to the trust deeds to the abatement of such burdens as the inhabitants shall necessarily stand charged with. The poor's allotment lets on the average for about £50 a year, which is distributed in coals. There are likewise some minor charities left by different individuals. John Sancroft Holmes esq. is lord of the manor, The chief landowners are the lord of the manor, the trustees of Osmond Springfield esq. and Captain Doughty. The soil is very various, consisting of light, heavy, and marshy lands; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, peas and beans. The area is 1,114 acres; rateable value £1,676 15s.; the population in 1881 was 416.
