The Will of Margaret Shorte
of Rydlington (Ridlington) 1558

In the name of god Amen

I Margaret Shorte of Rydlyngton in the County of Norff. widowe being of an halle mynde and in perfitt remembrance lauded be god the iij day of May in the yere of our lorde god MCCCCCLVIII make this my testament and last will in maner and forme folowinge First I bequethe my soule to almyghtie god to our ladye saint Marye and to all the blessed companye of heaven my bodye to be buryed in the churchyarde of Ridlyingtone aforesayde and I give to the highe aulter there for my tythes neglegentlye forgotten xii d Item I give to the reparations of the same churche x s to be payed within ii yeares next after my decease Item I will there be distrybuted among the poore people of Rydlyngtone aforesaid at my burial daye a pennye a pece Item I will there be distrybuted amonge the poore people of Happisburghe E(a)st( )ruston and Witton to iche of the same townes iij s iiijd also to the poore people of Bakketon and Honyng to iche of the same townes iij s iiijd also to Wallcote and Crostwycke xx d a pece. Item I will there be distributed amonge the poore people bye the teyme and space of x yeares next and immediatlye after my decease xx s bye yere in remembrance of my soule and of my husbande's Thomas Shorte soule. Item I gyve to Agnes the daughter of Lawrence Shorte to Margaret the daughter of Robert Shorte and to Margaret Shorte the daughter of Nycholas Shorte vi s viij d a yere. Item I gyve to Margaret Shorte the daughter of John Shorte x s to be payde to her at all the age xviij yeares. Item I gyve to everye one of my godchildren iiij d a pece. Item I gyve to Crystian Parrant xx d. Item I gyve to Agnes Shorte my worsted kirtell. Item I gyve to Nycholas Shorte my best candlesticke my best salte (?) my best poster bedd my best fether bedd and transome as well coverlet vj pewter platters ij pewter dyshes and ij Sacers a chaffinge dyshe my lesser brasse potte a bacyn2 ketill my next beste spytte Item I gyve to Thomas Shorte my (?)3 bedstede in my litle chamber my best dange4 my next best coverlette ij pewter platters and one of my lesser hangynge brasse kettilles a frien panne a brasse panne a lache5 panne and lytle possnette6 my next best candlesticke. Item I gyve to Margaret Shorte the wife of Thomas Shorte my best beeds and my best gowne Item I gyve to John Shorte my graye geldynge remaynynge in the handes of the same John. Item I do forgyve Nycholas Shorte and Thomas Shorte my sonnes suche percells of monyes as they do owe unto me excepte suche sum and sums of money as is growinge7 unto me myne executors and assignes for the purchase of theyre messuages landes and tennements bye the same Nycholas and Thomas Short to be payde to me myne executors or assinges accordynglye as by serteyane obligations playnelye doethe apeare Item I gyve to Agnes Shorte the daughter of Lawrence Shorte and to Margaret the daughter of Robert Shorte one cowe color [blank space in text] Item I will that myne executors shall have the use and occupation of suche houses as were excepted unto me bye my husbands will until the feaste of Saynte Mychaell the archanngell next after my decease. [which]) I gyve to (blank in text) Warde his sonne The residue off my goodes not bequeathed I put to the order and disposition of Robert Shorte my sonne payinge my dettes and to performe this my testament and last will of my husbande Thomas Shorte his will and and I ordeyne and make the sayde Robert Shorte and John Shorte myne executors and I gyve to the sayde John Shorte for his labour and paynes takynge herein fourtye shillynge and ij wethers remayninge in the handes of the same John and I ordeyne and make Gefferye Middelton supervisor of this my testament and last will bequeathed to hym for hys laboure xx s his testatus d?d Ita [Thus are the witnesses?] Galfrod Middelton John Warde Jnr? 1. Takches = presumed spelling of taches, meaning 'clasps.'

2. 'bacyn' ketill: probably 'bacon kettle.' It has holes to drain the fat.

3. Single sign in front of 'bedstede' which looks like the figure 8, or possibly a 'd.

4. 'dange/dauge'? May be an object in a bedroom, similar to a coverlet?

5. 'lache' written clearly; may be a reference to 'milk'?

6. 'possnette' = posnet, a small, usually iron, saucepan, often on short legs.

7. 'growinge' or 'ycrueing'?= That which has accrued to this point?
