A collection of press cuttings and articles.
and (mid-January 2012) certainly about time it got a comment from me !
considering that
The uprisings, first in Tunisia, but then followed (and expanded) in Egypt and almost every other country of the Arabic Mahgreb and the Middle East, and
The risings of young people in the western imperialism, such as
The riots in London, followed particularly in the Lanastrian north of England, but then follwoed by
"Occupations", i.e. "tent-cities" around St Pauls in the City of London and a multitude of cities around the world
suggesting that 2011 will, for historians, equal 1848 with the title of the "Year of Revolutions"
So what can this 86-yr old, who has seen it all, through WW2 and the "Cold War" that followed, all the tragedies, successes and defeats of democracy, over the last 70 years. usefully comment?
The first comment must be:
Never, over the past 70 years, has acceptance of the leadership of UK (and USA) governments been so low - or extending so far across the general level of the general leadrships of the establish leaderships of -the political partliamenary "representatives" on the Western "democracies" - indeed the general feeling that the ordinary people have no way to secure consideration of either their views or their interests.
Secondly, how can the mistakes of the financial elites of US and UK which forced billion £ or $ bailouts by governments, excuse austerity, massive unemployment, loss of pension rights, restriction of old-age assiatance, and all the massive attacks by governments on the "welfare state" be justfied while financiers continue to award themselves billion-$ or £ "bonuses" for their failures.
Naturally, I am no Oracle with the answers, but surely it is up to me to do what I can to help readers understand, something of what is going on and what, possbly we can do to fight it.
My first contribution is a link to a highly amusing explanation of the crisis by the eminent British (presently living in the USA) geographer David Harvey at Animate - Crisis of Capitalisn". which in a highly amusing way sums up my feelings of political/economic probelms of the present moment.
